「黒人以外が歌うことを禁ずる」と作曲者自身によって厳命された「ポーギーとベス」。その言葉を裏付けるように、サマー・タイムを初めとした音楽が黒人的であるばかりでなく、そのストーリー、心理描写などありとあらゆる要素が、当時の黒人社会を生き生きと表出した作品として、現在では高く評価されています。しかし一方で、ジャズ化されたり、ミュージカル化されたりと、作品本来の持つ音楽的緻密さが損なわれるなど、正当な演奏が意外や少ないという事実も否めません。このCDは一時代前のスタイルではあるものの、余分な潤色のない演奏スタイルとなっています。
